Plan your event

Step One

Work out what you want to achieve

Knowing what you want to achieve will help you design your event. To get as many as possible participating, design an event that people with all sorts of fitness levels can join. Get Active Victoria tracks time being active not steps, so everyone can participate in a way that suits them. Have a look at some event ideas for inspiration.

Setting an activity goal can be good as it gives participants something to aim for, but if you want widespread participation, consider where people are starting from and keep the goal realistic. Perhaps you simply want people to be more active than they are now rather than target a specific level of activity. Goals can be incremental too. A collective goal for your organisation is another option.

Make the event positive, supportive and enjoyable. If physical activity is enjoyable, then people are more likely to stick with it.

Step Two

Choose the event length and timing

Decide how long the event will run. You can choose any length event with Get Active Victoria’s Teams. Think about what will suit your participants, and any holidays or activities that may interrupt the event. Keep in mind that the longer the event, the harder it is to maintain enthusiasm.

Create some guidelines

Set the guidelines for the event, including:

  • How people join the event
  • When they need to sign up
  • How many people should be in a team
  • How you are going to record everyone’s activity.

Monitor how your event is going

Track how everyone is going during the event. Event participants can use the Get Active Victoria Activity Tracker to record activity and everyone’s results are available on a leaderboard.

The Activity Tracker is also available on the mobile app plus there is a timer that makes recording activity on the go easy.

Celebrate and Evaluate!

A little healthy competition is great for those that enjoy it but it’s not for everyone. Find ways to celebrate activity that can include everyone rather than just the most active individuals or teams. Here’s a few ideas:

  • Encourage participants to photograph where they are getting active and create a photo board.
  • Highlight participants or teams that are most improved.
  • Encourage participants to share stories of their progress and how they are benefitting from the event.
  • Recognise participants who are active every day of the event no matter how much activity they do.
  • Maintain momentum with updates and announcements throughout the event.

Once your event is over, look at how it went and what you would change for a future event.
